ALEYO ROSELYNE

Aleyo’s education journey at the University of Nairobi commenced in 2013 pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Biotechnology. She graduated top of her class in 2017 with a First Class Honours and was awarded a prize and certificate of merit by the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Trustee Fund as the best final year student in the 2016/2017 academic year. This saw her be awarded the University of Nairobi Scholarship to pursue her masters in Microbiology. She embarked on her research funded by the National Research Fund in collaboration with UoN and KALRO. Her MSc. thesis was titled “Characterization and antimicrobial activity of Serratia marcescens endosymbionts of Rhabditis nematodes against selected bacterial and fungal pathogens”. The results demonstrated positive inhibitory activity of S. marcescens against antibiotic resistant human pathogens as well as plant pathogenic fungal species.

Aleyo’s passion for research, agricultural sustainability, food waste mitigation, climate change and entrepreneurship is unrivalled. She currently is the Chief Technical Officer at Ecodudu ltd, working on turning organic waste into alternative protein and organic fertilizer using black soldier fly larvae. This process reduces carbon emissions and provides an alternative source of protein for animal feeds to farmers at a more affordable price. Her dream is to implement the solutions obtained from her research and work into real-life experiences for a better world. She envisions a Kenya with empowered women and youths.

Her gratitude goes to her mentor & supervisor, Dr. Maina Wagacha (UoN) and her supervisors Dr. Nelson Amugune (UoN) and Dr. Charles Waturu (KALRO) for their support and encouragement. She is also greatly indebted to her family and friends. Above all she thanks God for always lighting her path.
