The African Union -InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) has established a Network of Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Fisheries, Aquaculture and aquatic Biodiversity (AUN-CEFAAB) to strengthen research, training, innovation, and collaboration across Africa. The network promotes knowledge sharing and partnerships among institutions and development stakeholders to advance sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and aquatic resource management.

In October 2024, the Department of Biology, University of Nairobi, was endorsed by the African Union Ministers, at the Second Extra Ordinary Session of the Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and Environment (ARDWE), as an African Union Centre of Excellence for Training and Research in Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystems.

To support capacity development in this field, the Centre is offering two (2) MSc scholarships for the 2026/2027 and 2027/2028 academic years. The scholarships target training in aquatic biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management and restoration, sustainable development, aquatic resource governance and policy, climate change resilience, and the Blue Economy.
