University of Nairobi partners with ICPE to pilot research on reducing antibiotic use in East African farming.

This two-year Kenya–Slovenia partnership project introduces bacteriophage-based alternatives to antibiotics in farming, aiming to reduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promote sustainable agriculture. Through technology transfer, field trials, and capacity building—especially among women farmers—it supports Kenya’s AMR policy and aligns with the FAO agreement. Key activities include phage research, product development, and establishing local expertise and production. Implemented with partners like the University of Nairobi, ICPE, and Jafral, the project enhances food safety, public health, and environmental protection. It contributes to SDGs 1, 2, 3, 5, and 15 by promoting innovation, resilience, and gender equality in agriculture.
