Prof Hiremagalu N.B Gopalan visits his former department after two decades

Prof. Gopalan, his wife Geetha Murthy and son Raghukul Gopalan today paid a visit to the Department of Biology after more than two decades.

Gopalan, a Professor of Genetics, joined the Department of Botany, University of Nairobi, in 1979 after leaving Kenyatta University where he worked as a senior lecturer.  He later joined the United Nations Environment Programme ((UNEP), Nairobi as programme officer in the environmental and human health unit in 1992 before retiring in 2005.

Gopalan's research and teaching interests are in the fields of Environmental Health, Genetic Toxicology and Health impact of Air Pollution.

Gopalan was a mentor to many botanists and trained many of the current renowned researchers in the field of genetics and molecular biology such as Prof.. J. Kahindi, DVC A&S- Pwani University, the late Dr. Njagi, Lecturer- KU Dr. J. Machuka (KU) and Dr Nelson Amugune (UoN).

Prof. Gopalan is still energetic and resourceful and was very delighted to meet his former studentsin the Department.
