The MPI Thematic Area offers the student a broad range of  courses in the field of microbiology and biotechnology. The courses are designed to provide the learner with in-depth knowledge of microbial life ranging from bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa to viruses. To ensure a more holistic approach to the teaching of microbiology and  its applications, complementary courses  from other  Thematic Areas  in the School are  incorporated  in the taught programmes.

Apart from teaching courses in the BSc (Microbiology & Biotechnology) degree  program members of staff in The MPI Thematic Area also teach courses to students in other degree programmes including: BSc, BSc(Biology), BSc (Environmental Conservation & Natural Resources Management) and also B Ed (Sc) and other ODL programmes.

The MPI Thematic Area offers postgraduate training in three programmes: MSc (Microbiology)

MSc (Mycology) and MSc (Applied Parasitology). Various students are undertaking research leading to award of Ph D degrees in various fields in the Thematic Area.
