Overview

This is a science degree programme degree that will specialize in subjects dealing with the environment, and natural resources conservation and manage Environment issues and natural resource conservation and management of major concern. that will specialize in subjects dealing of major concern.

Graduates of this degree programme will find themselves well placed to meet the challenges of this expanding field. The field of natural resources conservation and management is a complex interdisciplinary nature and, therefore, it is difficult to provide a thorough coverage of all areas of natural resources management and environmental sciences in one undergraduate curriculum. The course will be composed of four core subject areas, namely biological sciences, physical sciences, environmental science and policy.

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Conservation and Natural Resource Management is designed to produce natural resources and environmental professionals with a broad interdisciplinary background coupled with specific focus in identifying, understanding, protecting, enhancing and managing natural resources and their environment. It is a campus-wide programme coordinated by the Department of Biology. The students will learn how natural resource systems function, how to maintain the functions that are both important both for ecosystem sustainability sustainability and for man’s use of those ecosystems. They will also deal with economic, social and political issues of natural resource use and environment management decision-making processes.

Course Duration

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Conservation and Natural Resource Management is a 4-year degree programme offered on a fulltime basis or by distance learning.

Philosophy of the programme

The Department of Biology offers an undergraduate programme for the B.Sc. Degree based on the course units system. The degree programme designed to equip graduates with skills and expertise in environmental science, and natural resources conservation and management. The environment is a vital pillar for sustainable development in the country.  Graduates of this degree programme will have the capacity to meet challenges that emanate from the context of development and environmental conservation. Natural resources conservation and environmental management is complex and interdisciplinary and largely informed the philosophy and design of this programme. The foundation of the programme is built upon four core discipline areas, biological sciences, physical sciences, environmental science and policy. In addition to this, the programme has components dealing with economic, social and political issues of natural resource use and environmental management decision-making processes. The driving philosophy is to produce professionals with an interdisciplinary background who can identify, comprehend, protect, enhance and manage natural resources and the environment. The course equips the graduate with professional skill and capacity to pursue postgraduate studies in environmental sciences and other related academic disciplines

Rationale of the programme

The environment is one of the key pillars of Vision 2030 and attainment of Sustainable Development Goals. Graduates of this programme will contribute to sustainable development and conservation of Kenya’s natural resource and beyond, through evidence-based research and applications of ecological theories and practices in management and conservation of species and ecosystems

Objectives

The programme is aimed at producing competent graduates equipped with knowledge and skills in the field of environmental sciences to meet challenges associated with management and conservation of natural resources in Kenya and beyond.

Mode of Delivery

1. Face to face

The programme will be delivered through a variety of face-to-face methods such as lectures, tutorials, laboratory or field-based practical lessons, demonstrations, individual or group assignments and presentations

2. Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL)

The ODeL mode of study will run for a minimum of eight (8) semesters of twenty four (24) weeks each and a maximum of sixteen (16) semesters from the date of registration.

The ODeL mode of study will be offered using multi-media approach, including a variety of self-instructional print and electronic study materials. In addition, there will be limited face-to-face instructional mode during residential training. The face-to-face instruction shall not exceed one third (1/3) of the instruction time.

  1. The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Conservation and Natural Resource Management is a 4-year degree programme offered on a fulltime basis or by distance learning.
  2. Courses shall be evaluated in terms of units; a course unit being defined as a series of 45 one- hour lecture equivalents. For this purpose one 1-hour lecture is equivalent to one 2-hour tutorial or one 3-hour practical or any combination of these that may be recommended by the School’s Academic Board and approved by Senate.
  3. Candidates for the Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources Management shall take a minimum of 44 course units during the four years study.
  4. In the first year of study a candidate is required to take a minimum of six course units from the School of Biological Sciences, three course units from the Department of Chemistry and, three Common Undergraduate Courses.
  5. In the 2nd year of study, a candidate is required to take a minimum of nine course units from the Department of Biology, two course units from the Department of Geography and one course from the Department of Meteorology.
  6. In the third year of study, a candidate is required to take a minimum of nine course units from the Department of Biology and one course from the Department of Land Resource Management and agricultural technology.
  7. In the fourth year of study, a candidate is required to take eight course units from the Department of Biology and one course unit each from the Department of Geography and Law School.
  8. Fourth year students will be required to conduct a supervised individual project and submit a report duly typed and bound for examination.

A candidate eligible for admission to the above degree programme must meet the following requirements:

i) Applicants must have obtained the minimum University of Nairobi and Department of Biology general admission requirements.

ii) Applicants must have passed with a minimum average of a C+ in KCSE with a minimum of a C+ in Biology or Biological Sciences and a minimum of a C (plain) in other science subjects (Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or Physical Sciences) in KCSE or equivalent. Students with a C+ in Geography will have an added advantage.

iii) Two principal passes at KACE, one of which must be in Biology and the other in any other science subject from the following: Chemistry, Geography, Physics and Mathematics.

iv) Holders of a degree, diploma or equivalent in a biological science or related subjects from a University recognized by the Senate.

Exam Regulations

The general rules and regulations governing examinations and award of degrees in the University of Nairobi shall apply

  1. All courses shall be examined by Ordinary Examinations during the academic year in which they are taken. Such Ordinary Examinations shall consist of continuous assessment and a two-hour end of semester examination for each unit. Unless otherwise stated, end of semester examinations will comprise 70% of the total course marks whereas continuous assessment will account for 30%. Continuous assessment shall consist of several evaluations based on a suitable combination of practicals, tutorials, assignments and class tests.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               
  2. Each unit shall be graded out of a maximum of 100 marks, and the pass mark for each unit shall be 40%.  Marks shall be translated into letter grades as outlined in regulation 6.0 above
  3. A candidate may, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate, be admitted to Special examinations in the courses for which the candidate failed to sit ordinary Examinations at the prescribed time. Special Examinations shall be graded as Ordinary Examinations.
  4. A candidate who, whether by Ordinary or Special examinations or after repeating the year of study:
  • Passes in at least ten (10) units in the 1st or 2nd year of study, or at least eight (8) units in the 3rd year of study shall, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by senate, be allowed to proceed to the subsequent year of study.
  • Passes in at least eight (8) units in the 4th year of study shall, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by senate, be considered for award of a degree, subject to Regulation 9.1
  • A candidate who, whether by Ordinary or Special examinations or after repeating the year of study:
    1. Passes in seven to nine units in the 1st or 2nd year of study, or in six to seven units in the 3rd year of study shall, on the recommendation of the School Academic Board and approval by Senate, be admitted to supplementary examinations in the courses failed which must be passed before proceeding to the subsequent year of study. 
    2. Any unit which a candidate sits a supplementary shall be marked out of 100 % and maximum mark indicated as 40 %.
  1. A candidate who after sitting a supplementary examination in the first or second year passes in less than ten  units shall be required to repeat the year
  2. A candidate who after sitting a supplementary examination in the third or fourth year passes in less than eight units shall be required to repeat the year.
    • Passes in eight course units in the 4th year of study shall, on the recommendation of the School Academic Board and approval by Senate, qualify for award of the degree subject to satisfying all graduation requirements.

A candidate shall, on the recommendation of the School Board of Examiners and approval by Senate, be allowed to repeat the year of study:

  • If the candidate passes in four to six units in the 1st or 2nd year of study
  • If the candidate passes in four to five units in the 3rd or 4th year of study  for any other reasons such as sickness subject to the following conditions:
  • A candidate shall be allowed to repeat a year of study only once.
  • A candidate repeating a particular year of study will be required to take only the units previously failed or not completed and shall not be allowed to register for additional units
  • Any repeated unit shall be marked like an Ordinary Examination.

A candidate shall normally be required to discontinue from University if:

  • In any year of study the candidate passes in less than four units,
  • The candidate fails to follow the prescribed units.
