The Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences offeres 10 specilizations namely;

- DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENTOMOLOGY
- DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN GENETICS
- DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HYDROBIOLOGY
- DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN BIOLOGY OF CONSERVATION
- DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN AGRICULTURAL ENTOMOLOGY
Course Duration
The program is for a duration of minimum three (3) academic years and maximum seven (7) academic years.
Philosophy of the Programme
The philosophy of PhD in Biological sciences degree programme is that learners are facilitated by various instructional means and conducive environment to acquire advanced level of biological sciences knowledge and skills to enable them succeed in their careers and to make local and global contributions in biological sciences and related fields.
Rationale of the Programme
The expected role of the education sector is to equip learners with desired values, attitudes, knowledge, skills and competencies essential for productive employment. Vision 2030 has set wealth creation as one of its goals and targets the exploitation of available natural resources to spur development in agriculture, energy, water and health among other economic sectors.
Students are equipped with skills to be able to identify and solve problems facing humanity in addition to inculcating a culture of innovation and discovery. To contribute to the achievement of these aspirations, the the university to offers relevant knowledge and hands-on training in form of practical, projects and industrial linkages to enhance development of entrepreneurial research skills.
Objectives of the programme
i) Provide high quality training in specialised areas at a national, regional and international level with up to date theoretical and practical knowledge.
ii) Produce personnel with specific skills who are capable of providing specialised services and other practical aspects.
iii) Train students in current trends in specialised areas.
iv) Draw interdisciplinary expertise and prepare the students to exploit information technology.
Mode of Delivery
The mode of delivery shall be either face-to-face and/or online and blended.
Face-to-Face
The face-to-face mode of delivery is given to students admitted in the full time program and shall consist of seminars, workshops and consultations with supervisors
Online learning
The online mode of delivery is given to students admitted in the full time program and shall consist of seminars, workshops and consultations with supervisors.
Blended
This mode combines the face to face leaning and online learning delivery methods.

Structure
Normally, the candidates will be required to carry out their thesis research under supervision and subsequently compile a thesis which would be presented for examination in the prescribed manner for Doctoral thesis in all faculties.
Note:
Candidates who did not go through courses in scientific writing and research methods during their Masters degree Programme will be required to take such courses during their doctoral studies.
Admission Requirements
Entry Requirements and Regulations
i) Common regulations for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) degree in the University of Nairobi shall apply.
ii) Holders of a Master of Science degree in Biological and Physical Sciences, Bioinformatics, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry of the University of Nairobi.
iii) Holders of Master of Science degree in Biological and Physical Sciences, Bioinformatics, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry or an equivalent qualification from a University recognized by Senate.
iv) Candidates will be required to draw and submit a detailed Doctoral research proposal in the prescribed manner at the time of applying for admission.
